Skin aging can change your appearance in many ways. You skin become saggy, develop wrinkles and it will become more sensitive and drier. Our body requires a little amount of sun rays to get vitamin D and to fight some minor diseases, but excessive exposure to sun rays can incredibly harm our skin. How does skin aging happen?
The human skin is made up of three layers, the outer layer is called the epidermis, that protects us from UV radiations, and bacteria. The second one is known as the dermis, which produces collagen and gives elastic fibers to the skin, that keeps it firm and intact. The third and inner most layer is the fat layer. Both the epidermis and the dermis layers will maintain their function our entire life. They provide protection to our inner system. How our skin is unable to prevent skin damage while aging?
The Dermis is made up of complex ECM, extra cellular matrix proteins, collagen, and elastin fibers, which are responsible to provide elasticity to skin. As we age naturally, the ECM loses the integrity to hold a protein structure. Due to loss of the fibroblast cells, the production of collagen is also decreased. These activities of the cells in the dermis layer, reduce the elasticity of skin and our tight and firm skin starts losing its texture. This is not the only reason behind skin aging.
Our outer skin layer is directly exposed to sunlight, which is an additional factor besides ECM damage and collagen loss. The sun light exposure makes our skin age really fast. The cells in epidermis layer react with UV rays and release a chemical that diffuses in dermis and produces an enzyme in the dermal fibroblast.
This complex series of procedure inside the skin results in wrinkles, fine lines and sagging. Pollution is also a factor that must be blamed for damaging skin cells.
The fat layer beneath our skin shrinks naturally with growing age. That gives support to the upper layers. Due to shrinking of the fat layers, the support level is reduced. The lowest layer of fat is not affected by ultra-violent rays, because sun rays are unable to penetrate that deep into the skin. These fat cells also respond to the chemical changes that happen in the epidermis layer.
Effects of aging on skin:
The health of our skin condition depends on many factors as we age that include harsh weather conditions, sun rays or bad habits. Skin changes due to growing age:
